Inspired by his travels through Southeast Asia, Hardy Blechman, the son of an antique dealer, founded Maharishi — one of the most significant streetwear labels of his time. However, the brand experienced a lull in visibility in recent years. The brand's name, which means “great visionary,” reflects its ethos of durability, ethical production using hemp and organic fibers, and its signature use of camouflage patterns. Maharishi combines the latest technologies with military functionality to create garments that are both practical and stylish.
Blechman’s extensive research into Disruptive Pattern Material (DPM) has redefined camouflage, presenting it in unconventional ways, often through vibrant and reinterpreted patterns. This creative approach aligns military aesthetics with a pacifist message, transforming camouflage into a symbol of harmony and connection with nature. The 1990s marked a golden age for hip-hop and rap, with artists like Nas, Biggie, and Outkast becoming cultural icons. Maharishi emerged during this era, producing sustainable hip-hop clothing—a rarity at the time, when sustainability was not yet mainstream.
After its popularity waned in 2003 due to shifting fashion trends, Maharishi experienced a revival with the resurgence of streetwear. The brand modernized its collections while staying true to its roots: earthy tones, wide cuts, and distinctive Asian and spiritual motifs. The detailed embroideries and high-quality workmanship remain hallmarks of Maharishi, blending military functionality with modern fashion sensibilities. Today, the label drops seasonal collections available at its flagship store in London’s Soho district and online through select retailers.
Blechman’s designs, such as Snopants—pants inspired by snowboarding—showcase innovation and technical sophistication, including adjustable lengths and unique features like the Temple Bead elastic cord stopper. These pants became iconic, highlighting the brand's emphasis on both functionality and innovation. Maharishi continues to be a pioneer in sustainable fashion, using materials like hemp and recycled fabrics. Notably, their partnership with ITS Artea led to the creation of a waterproof hemp material made of 95% natural fibers, reflecting their commitment to environmentally friendly technology.
Collaborations with brands like Nike, Reebok, G-Shock, and Travis Scott have kept Maharishi relevant, blending their commitment to sustainability with innovative design. The 2022 “LT Court Hemp” sneaker exemplifies their use of hemp, with cream-colored fabric and military-inspired aesthetics. Another standout collaboration was with Fracup in 2021, which resulted in a jungle boot inspired by the US Army’s Vietnam War footwear. This version, however, was crafted from vegetable-dyed Italian leather and suede, with a lightweight Vibram Gum-Lite sole for grip.
Maharishi’s ability to adapt to new trends while staying true to their original ethics and aesthetics has enabled the brand to persist in today’s fast-paced fashion world. Through their combination of innovation, sustainability, and timeless design, Maharishi has earned a firm place in the history of streetwear.
