Opening a store dedicated to sneakers, streetwear, vinyl and graffiti culture in 1997 was never about following a trend. It meant being part of a scene long before many people even recognized that scene as a market.

Today, Underpressure in Hamburg is not only a fixture of the Schanze, but also one of Germany’s early independent stores of its kind - a place that has not only accompanied Hamburg’s creative scene over the years, but helped shape it.

Underpressure was founded in a small shop in the Karoviertel district of St. Pauli. Today, the store calls Schanze home, just a few streets away, and remains deeply rooted in the part of Hamburg where streetwear, graffiti, music and the city’s creative scene have been coming together for decades.

Between streetwear, sneakers, vinyl, spray cans, markers, graffiti accessories, Apparel and selected toys, Underpressure curates a product range that feels less like classic retail and more like a subculture that has grown over time.

The store’s roots run deep in the graffiti scene. This is reflected not only in the product range, but also in its overall attitude.

At Underpressure, graffiti is not a decorative reference. It is part of the store’s own history. Spray cans and accessories are just as integral here as Footwear, Apparel and music.

At the same time, Underpressure has always been more than just a shop. Over the years, the store has brought exhibitions, art events, collaborations and projects to life together with established artists and creative voices from the city.

Many of these projects have grown out of the in-house label, turning the store into a place where subculture is not only showcased, but actively pushed forward.

Today, Underpressure exists somewhere between a store, a community hub and a cultural archive. A place for creative people, old friends, regulars and anyone who wants to express themselves creatively.

The fact that Underpressure remains relevant after almost three decades comes down to exactly this mix. The store has never stood still, but it has never strayed from its roots either.

While streetwear has long since become global mainstream, Underpressure remains closely connected to the Schanze, the city and the scene it originally grew out of.

In an era where sneaker and streetwear retail often feels interchangeable, Underpressure stands for something that cannot simply be copied: history, attitude and genuine cultural depth.

And perhaps that is exactly the difference: Underpressure does not just talk about subculture. It comes from it.
