In her latest collaboration with Nike, designer Martine Rose has seized a defining moment for fashion and sports and ushered us all into an “after” world—a world that is more inclusive, egalitarian, empowering, and inspiring.
The Nike x Martine Rose collection breaks down the boundaries of soccer styling for men and women with gender-neutral, tailored suits that advance the sport’s style and expand its culture for the next generation.
The collection connects and blends the moments of “stepping off the plane” and “arriving on the field.” It elevates the look of elite women’s soccer and bridges the gender gap through thoughtfully designed, tailored apparel for women’s sports.
“When a woman wears a suit, it expresses strength, resilience, and beauty,” says Martine. “I want women to feel just as strong in their suits as men do. What’s more, even though I feature women in the story, the suit isn’t tied to any one gender.”
Anyone can wear it. I hope that one day we’ll stop talking about gender in sports and just talk about the sport itself. The collection, which heralds a new era in women’s soccer, is designed to capture the spirit of this summer’s most important sporting event and be worn by participants in a nuanced and meaningful way.
“I love the combination of sports, fashion, and culture, and as an athlete, I’ve always wanted what we wear to stand for more,” says Megan Rapinoe, a Nike athlete, member of the U.S. Women’s National Team, and muse for the Nike x Martine Rose collection.
“I think that Martine, as a designer inspired by sports culture, can infuse so much meaning into her work, and it’s really cool that she can express herself through this moment that’s so special to us—and of course, the pieces are just dope.”
The Nike x Martine Rose collection includes a tracksuit jacket, pants, a trench coat, and a shirt, as well as accessories such as socks, gloves, and sunglasses, and the latest version of the Nike x Martine Rose Shox Mule MR 4.
The shoe’s eye-catching blue and purple colorway is a nod to the famous bright goalkeeper jerseys of the 1990s, while the silhouette serves as a symbol of equality in soccer,
the ever-expanding culture of the sport, and as a preview of what’s to come from Nike and Martine throughout the year.
