From the outset, the collaboration between Nike and Jacquemus has both enlivened and celebrated the nuanced facets and ever-evolving dimensions of what it means to be an athlete.
The spring 2024 collection from Nike and Jacquemus is no exception and underlines the belief that sport is not just about performance, but also about expanding your personal style and self.
For Simon Porte Jacquemus, sport and style go hand in hand. Jacquemus, his eponymous brand, worked for the first time in Summer 2022 with Nike and combined upscale silhouettes with sporty ready-to-wear for a debut collection inspired by old ACG and Nike campaigns from the 90s.
Recent collaborations such as the 2023 J Force 1 — inspired in part by Air Force 1, an icon of performance and style — look just as good in a museum as they do in public areas of our world.
femininity. Be true to yourself. connection with nature. performance. Tempo. These concepts run through the current Nike x Jacquemus spring 2024 collection, which includes six pieces of clothing for women, a unisex T-shirt, a hoodie and sweatpants with laser-cut swoosh patterns, a new edition of the J Force 1 made of high-quality brown nubuck and the icing on the cake: Le Swoosh Bag - the first time that Nike's iconic Swoosh was transformed into a handbag and also the first Nike x Jacquemus accessory.
“At the end of 2020, when we're working on the bag Le Swoosh When I started, I was obsessed with the Swoosh itself. It's a unique logo, I wanted to reinterpret it and make it minimalistic,” says Simon Porte Jacquemus.
“I also love working on unique shapes when it comes to bags and not just thinking about their actual uses. I wanted an accessory that represented Nike in its purest form: the iconic Swoosh itself.
“For me,” he continues, “the Swoosh is the ultimate Nike logo that lasts across generations and collections over the years and decades. With its minimalism and unique shape, it gives creatives an infinite number of designs and interpretations.”
For their spring 2024 campaign, Nike and Jacquemus have signed World Athletics Champion, Olympic Hope, Nike Athlete and one of the world's most elegant and fastest women, Sha'Carri Richardson.
She not only embodies the collection and serves as a muse for the campaign, but also represents the dimensions and depth of an athlete who is constantly facing her toughest and most enduring competition: herself.
“Fashion is so personal and I definitely use it to express myself — it can show how you feel, what the mood is like, how creative you are. From the colors you wear to the risks you take, fashion can be an outlet to show the world a bit of yourself,” says Sha'Carri.
“And that's why Simon's collection inspires me; the pieces are unusual and elegant at the same time and they inspire me to continue to show myself as I am and hopefully inspire others to do so as well.”
When asked about the moment he knew he wanted to work with Sha'Carri, Jacquemus says: “I was impressed by Sha'Carri's performance in Budapest in 2023 when she became the women's 100 m world champion. I also loved how she kept her own style and was so combative and unique in her competitions, regardless of dress code rules and uniforms. It is so strong to be your own self in the world of track and field! I wanted to work with her right away.
