A true piece of basketball history is now up for auction: An original Chicago Bulls jersey worn by Michael Jordan during a preseason game in his 1984 rookie season is currently being offered at Sotheby’s.

The iconic red jersey was worn in a warm-up game against the Indiana Pacers on October 5, 1984 — just weeks before MJ officially made his NBA debut.

The jersey is remarkable not only because of its age or condition, but above all because of its historical value: It is the earliest-known Chicago Bulls jersey that Jordan has ever worn in a game.

According to Sotheby's, this is a “game-worn” jersey that is also clearly documented photographically. Photos show young Jordan warming up and playing in exactly this shirt — proof that makes the decisive difference in the world of memorabilia.

For many fans and collectors, it symbolizes the moment when Michael Jordan set out to become a legend. Sotheby's therefore aptly titled the auction “Dawn of an Era.”

Experts estimate that the shirt could sell for several million US dollars — comparable pieces from Jordan's career have already reached top prices in the past.

So if you have the necessary change and want to call a piece of sports history your own, you should be quick now: The Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls rookie jersey from the 1984 preseason game is currently being auctioned at Sotheby's as part of the Dawn of an Era: Michael Jordan's 1984 Rookie Jersey auction — the current bid is 3,500,000 USD (around 3,220,000 euros).
