Shortly before the start of the 2025 Formula One season, adidas unveiled the new CLIMACOOL System — consisting of an insulated jacket and a specially developed cooling vest. The system will be available to the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team during races under hot conditions to support drivers' performance.

The innovative design was developed to overcome one of the biggest challenges for racers: maintaining optimal body temperature before starting in hot conditions.

During a race, cockpits can reach temperatures of up to 55-60 degrees Celsius, which can result in a loss of up to 4.2 kg of sweat.

The decisive time in which drivers can regulate their body temperature is a short 20-minute window between race preparation and the actual start.

Until now, racers have usually used cooling vests or ice vests for this purpose, but adidas has developed the CLIMACOOL system to maximize this effect and enable an even more effective reduction of skin and core body temperature.

Maximum cooling thanks to innovative technology

The adidas CLIMACOOL jacket combines coolant with integrated fans and insulating materials. In laboratory tests, the system — consisting of the jacket and a cooling vest specially developed with industry experts from INUTEQ — showed almost double the effect compared to conventional cooling or ice vests.

Studies suggest that lowering body and skin temperature improves both cognitive performance and decision-making. In addition, endurance performance — measured as time until fatigue in time trials — can be increased by up to 25%.

The CLIMACOOL system was developed in the adidas Innovation Lab and first tested with Kimi Antonelli. Both Kimi and George Russell then took the opportunity to test the system under real racing conditions during the pre-season test in Bahrain.

Throughout the season, it is always available to drivers when conditions offer a clear performance advantage. Adidas will continue to work closely with the drivers and their teams to continuously optimize the design and get the maximum performance advantage.

Alasdhair Willis, Chief Creative Officer of adidas: “When we returned to motorsport we wanted to see how we could bring true performance benefits to the teams. Our CLIMACOOL System is the first example of how we will bring innovation into the sport. We are challenging ourselves to deliver more impact, at greater speed, and products tuned to the specific needs of more sports. We will create the very best for the drivers.”

George Russell, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team driver: “Heat management is a key topic in F1. In hot races it is important to try and maintain a consistent and optimized core body temperature when in the car. When I first tried the adidas CLIMACOOL System I knew it would be something I’d want to include in my race day package. The challenging conditions bring an extra element to racing and I’m confident this will help improve my performance.”

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team driver, adds:”In very hot and humid races mitigating the rise in body temperature is important for performing at our best in the car. When I got to test the adidas CLIMACOOL System I was really impressed with the impact I felt. It’s clear there is a benefit for us as drivers and I’m looking forward to experiencing that during the season.”

CLIMACOOL's return to sport

The adidas CLIMACOOL System is already the second new product as part of the revival of the adidas CLIMACOOL range, following the launch of an innovative CLIMACOOL shoe last year.

Originally developed in 2002, the CLIMACOOL series revolutionized the sports industry with groundbreaking cooling technologies based on extensive athlete testing. adidas will continue to expand the CLIMACOOL product range in the future — with solutions for top athletes and innovative approaches for the next generation of cooling technology.

At the beginning of this year, adidas returned to motorsport and announced a long-term partnership with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team. This collaboration brings together two iconic brands in one of the world's fastest-growing sports.

Based on a shared passion for performance and excellence, the partnership uses adidas' 75 years of experience in high-performance sports to support the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team on its journey to success.
