Wir freuen uns ein Interview zu teilen welches wir mit Ozan Akcay vom VooStore geführt haben. Das Interview wurde in Englisch geführt und hier übersetzt.

A: Hallo! Wer bist Du? Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen?

O: Ich bin einfach ein Glückspilz, der es geschafft hat, seit 10 Jahren das zu tun, was er sich gewünscht hat - und vor eineinhalb Jahren in Berlin gelandet ist :)

A: Wie lange bist Du schon im Sneaker Game und wie bist Du da rein geraten?

O: Ich bin eher zufällig dazu gekommen - auf professioneller Ebene - als Nike jemanden für die Betreuung von Sneaker-/Modeboutiquen in Istanbul suchte, während ich eigentlich Musikfestivals und Events machte.

Auf persönlicher Ebene geht es wahrscheinlich auf meine frühen Basketballjahre zurück.

A: Mit welchem Modell hast du angefangen?

O: Mit dem klassischen Chuck Taylor All Star in der High School, aber zählt das überhaupt? Der Air Max 1 war der Nachfolger.

‍

A: Sneaker sind ein Hobby, aber für VooStore auch ein Teil deiner Arbeit. Was ist deine Aufgabe bei VooStore?

O: Angefangen habe ich als Marketing Manager & Sneaker Buyer - aber jetzt würde ich wahrscheinlich zusammenfassen, dass ich überall dabei bin und versuche, das Geschäft zu erweitern und sicherzustellen, dass alles reibungslos läuft.

A: Welchen Sneaker trägst du im Moment?

O: Ich trage den ASICS x Andersson Bell GEL-1090 in Silber. Wahrscheinlich schon seit 3-4 Monaten...ich habe nur am ersten Tag die Schnürsenkel entfernt, da sie mir zu Off-White-artig aussahen.

A: Was trägst du, wenn du keine Turnschuhe trägst?

O: Socken. :)

‍

‍

A: Welchen Turnschuh hast du zuletzt privat gekauft?

O: Das ist wirklich schon eine Weile her - es könnte der ASICS GEL-Kayano 14 sein, den ich letzten Sommer gekauft habe.

‍

A: "Bring it back!" - Welcher Schuh soll wieder released werden?

O: Wenn der Nike ACG Air Terra Albis nicht im nächsten Kalenderjahr oder so ein Comeback feiert, wäre ich ziemlich verärgert. :)

‍

A: Über welchen Sneaker bist Du traurig ihn verpasst zu haben?

O: Nicht wirklich traurig, aber ich konnte den New Balance 990v3 einfach nicht in meiner Größe (US 12.5) finden - das schmerzt schon etwas.

‍

A: Bist Du Mitglied bei einem Sneaker Stammtisch?

O: Eigentlich nein, war ich auch noch nie - ich bin wohl ein Außenseiter :)

‍

A: Gibt es eine Brand die zu unrecht unter dem Radar ist?

O: Immer noch ASICS - sie waren in den letzten Jahren am innovativsten und es sieht so aus, als würde das auch nicht aufhören.

‍

‍

A: Gibt es bei Deiner Sneakersammlung einen Fokus?

O: Ich habe versucht sie in den letzten 1-2 Jahren ziemlich minimal zu halten, es sind jetzt nur etwa 10 Sneaker, und ich kaufe nicht viel, und ich versuche definitiv, nicht auf die Trends aufzuspringen.

A: Wie lagerst Du Deine Sneakersammlung?

O: Ohne besondere Sorgfalt, einfach in ihren Kisten :)

‍

A: Gibt es einen Trend in der Sneakerszene, den Du vermisst oder über den Du froh bist, dass er verschwunden ist?

O: Der übertriebene Kollaborationshype kann gerne nachlassen, mehr als 4-5 Collabs pro Marke im Jahr brauchen wir wirklich nicht.

A: Du hast für Nike in Istanbul gearbeitet, gibt es dort einen kulturellen Unterschied in der Sneakerszene, oder ist die Liebe zu Sneakers interkulturell und überall gleich?

O: Auf jeden Fall. Leider gibt es dort keine weitreichende Sneaker Historie, im Vergleich zu Air Max hier in Berlin und Deutschland. Der Trend ist erst in den letzten 10 Jahren oder so aufgekommen, also ist die Konsumentenbasis recht jung und auch noch nicht etabliert. Dennoch ist es eine Stadt mit fast 20 Millionen Einwohnern, das Potenzial ist also riesig.

A: Welchen Trend siehst Du am Horizont?

O: Ich hoffe auf viel einfachere, zweckmäßige und minimalistische Sneaker-Kollektionen für alle.

‍

A: Reinigst Du Deine Sneaker, wenn ja, wie?

O: Niemals :), ich trage, strapaziere und beanspruche sie. Ich sorge dafür, dass sie ein spannendes, aber schmerzhaftes Leben haben, aber voll und ganz leben, und ziehe sie aus dem Verkehr, wenn die Zeit reif ist.

A: Bist Du penibel? Zum Beispiel mit dem Lacing oder trägst Du Deine Kleidung abgestimmt auf die Schuhe?

O: Ich schnüre meine Schuhe immer auf dem Knie, als ob ich meiner Freundin einen Heiratsantrag machen würde. Das führte dazu, dass sie immer den Blickkontakt vermeidet wenn ich das tue :)

A: Hast Du Rituale, zum Beispiel beim Auspacken eines neuen Sneakers?

O: Oh nein, ich trage sie einfach sofort und hoffe, dass sie so schnell wie möglich schmutzig werden und abgenutzt aussehen. Ich mag es nicht, wenn Turnschuhe 100%ig neu aussehen und glänzen - besonders weiße Lederschuhe.

A: Auf welchen Release wartest Du gerade?

O: Im April kommt eine spezielle ASICS-Kollaboration heraus, die ich leider noch nicht verraten kann, aber ich habe mich seit dem Nike Mars Yard 2.0 nicht mehr so sehr auf einen Schuh gefreut.

‍

A: Wie wichtig sind echte Sneaker Stores im Vergleich zum Online-Handel für Dich?

O: Direkt bei einer Marke zu bestellen - ich glaube, das habe ich nie getan. Ich versuche immer, bei Geschäften zu bestellen, die ich mag und schätze, auch wenn es sich um Online-Shopping handelt.

A: Hast Du aus Versehen schon mal einen Fake gekauft?

O: LOL nein, nicht das ich wüsste, wenn mich nicht irgendwer reingelegt hat.

‍

A: Hast Du eine Sneaker Anekdote die Du mit uns teilen möchtest?

O: Ich habe meinen Nike Mars Yard 2.0 einmal in einem Kopfkissenbezug in die Waschmaschine gesteckt, weil er einen Motorölfleck hatte, wahrscheinlich die stressigste Stunde meines Lebens.

Das Wildleder und die Farbe sind ein bisschen abgetragen, aber das war mir am Ende egal. Jetzt sind Löcher drauf, aber es sind noch immer meine Lieblingssneaker.

A: Trägst du alle deine Sneaker oder gibt es welche, die "zu gut für die Straße" sind?

O: Nein, ich trage sie alle. Diejenigen, die ich "unter Retail" verkaufe, habe ich ein paar Mal getragen, war aber nie 100%ig zufrieden damit.

A: Verrätst Du uns den nächsten Sneaker, den wir bei VooStore nicht verpassen sollten?

O: Ich liebe die neuen Salomon ACS Pro Colorways!

Abgesehen davon - es ist zwar noch etwas Zeit bis dahin...wir von VooStore arbeiten an unserer ersten Sneaker-Kollaboration, die im Frühjahr/Sommer 2023 auf den Markt kommen soll.

A: Hi! Who are you? Can you briefly introduce yourself?

O: I’m just a lucky guy who managed to do what he has desire for – for the past 10 years, and found myself in Berlin 1.5 years ago. :)

A: How long have you been in the sneaker universe, how did you get into it?

O: I got into it quite randomly – on the professional level – where Nike was trying to find someone to manage sneaker / fashion boutiques in Istanbul, while I was actually doing music festivals and events.

On a personal level, it probably dates to my early basketball years.

‍

A: With which model did you start?

O: Chuck 70 classic in high school but does it even count? Air Max 1 was the follow-up.

‍

A: Sneakers are a hobby, but for VooStore also a part of your work. What is your task at VooStore?

O: Started as Marketing Manager & Sneaker Buyer – but now I’d probably summarize to being all around the place and trying to expand business, make sure things are running smooth.

‍

A: Which sneaker are you wearing right now?

O: Wearing the ASICS x Andersson Bell GEL-1090 in silver for the past 3-4 months probably, but removed the laces the first day as they looked too Off-White-y.

‍

A: What do you wear when you are not wearing sneakers?

O: Socks. :)

‍

A: Which sneaker did you buy last privately?

O: It’s really been a while – could be ASICS GEL-Kayano 14 that I bought past summer.

‍

A: Bring it back..which shoe should come back for a re-release/retro?

O: If Nike ACG Air Terra Albis is not making a comeback in the next calendar year or so I’ll be quite upset.

‍

A: Which sneaker do you mourn, i.e. which one did you ditch and then regret?

O: Not a regret but I just couldn’t find New Balance 990 v3 in my size (US 12.5) – which hurts the most these days.

‍

A: Are you a member of a “Sneaker Stammtisch” / Sneaker Community?

O: Actually no, never been as well – guess I’m an outsider. :)

‍

A: Which brand do you think is unjustly under the radar?

O: Still ASICS tbh – they’ve been the most innovative the past couple of years and seems like it won’t be stopping as well.

‍

A: Does your private collection have a focus?

O: I’m really trying to keep it quite minimal for the past 1-2 years, it’s only around 10 sneakers now, and not buying much, and definitely trying not to jump on the trends.

‍

A: How do you store your collection?

O: No extra care, just in their boxes. :)

‍

A: Is there a trend in the sneaker scene that you miss or are glad to see gone?

O: The extensive collaboration hype is gladly fading away, it could even fade away faster. We really don’t need more than 4-5 collaboration drops per brand a year.

‍

A: You worked for Nike in Istanbul, is there a cultural difference in the sneaker scene over there, or is the love for sneakers intercultural and the same everywhere?

O: Definitely. Unfortunately, there is not much of a cultural heritage over there, per comparison to Air Max heritage here in Berlin & Germany. The trend is just picking up over the past 10 years or so, so the consumer base is quite young but also therefore, not established. Still, it’s a city of almost 20 million, so the potential is huge.

‍

A: What trend do you see on the horizon?

O: What I hope to see is a much more simpler, utilitarian and minimal collection for everyone.

‍

A: Do you clean your sneakers, if so how?

O: Never :), I wear them, tear them out, tire & exhaust them, make sure they have a fun but painful life, yet live fully, and retire whenever the time is right.

‍

A: Are you meticulous? For example a special way of lacing or matching your clothes with your shoes etc?

O: I always tie my shoes on my knee as if I’m proposing to my girlfriend and she’s always avoiding eye contact :)

‍

A: Do you have rituals, for example when unpacking a new shoe?

O: Oh no, just wear them out right away, hoping they get dirty & look worn asap. I don’t like when sneakers are looking 100% new and shiny – especially white leather ones.

‍

A: Which release are you looking forward to right now?

O: There is a special ASICS collab coming out around April that unfortunately I can’t tease at the moment, but I haven’t been this excited over a shoe since Mars Yard 2.0.

‍

A: How important are "real stores" to you compared to online retail (ordering directly from the manufacturer for example)?

O: Ordering directly from the brand – I think I never did. I always try to order from stores I love & appreciate even if it’s online shopping.  

‍

A: Have you ever "accidentally" bought a fake sneaker?

O: LOL non, not if any of these retailers haven’t fooled me to this day.

‍

A: Do you have a sneaker anecdote or more than one you would like to share?

O: I’ve put my Mars Yard 2.0 on the washing machine covered with a pillow sheet once as there was motor oil stain on it, probably the most stressful hour of my life. The suede and color wore off a bit, but I didn’t care at the end. There are holes on it right now but still my favorite sneakers.

A: Do you wear all your sneakers or are there some that are "too good for the street"?

O: Ah no, I wear them all, selling for under retail those I wore few times but never was 100% satisfied with.

‍

A: Tell us about the next sneaker we should not miss at VooStore?

O: Loving the new Salomon ACS Pro colorways!

Aside from that, we do have bit time, but as VooStore we’re working on our first sneaker collaboration to launch in Spring Summer 2023.
