"We knew we wanted to offer a shoe with a sleeker profile while maintaining our strong connection and history within the '70s running space.

I spent a lot of time researching vintage elements, pulling inspiration from New Balance heritage models, materials, colors, details and trims of the era. Even our choice to use materials like hairy suede overlays and woven mesh connects back to what was used in sneakers during that period of design.

The result is a new shoe that offers a low-profile look and blends together unique vintage quirks with a distinct modern-day appeal." says Joe Walsh, Lead Footwear Designer at New Balance.

Developing a new silhouette also means responding specifically to the current wishes of the New Balance community — instead of simply bringing back a well-known retro model.

The 471 combines breathable mesh inserts with rough suede overlays and gives an EVA midsole and visible foam on the tongue a deliberately incomplete vintage look.

The serrated overlay design at the forefoot pays homage to the iconic New Balance 320, adding a distinctive touch to the silhouette.

The design is complemented by leather N logos and subtle leather details on the heel and collar. The classic outsole with herringbone pattern rounds off the model both functionally and visually.

The New Balance 471 has already been released and is available in various colors at the following retailers: AFEW, Asphaltgold, HHV and SUPPA.
