“Creeper” refers to shoes characterized primarily by their thick, grooved sole. These shoes originated in the 1940s and were originally worn by British soldiers during World War II. After the war, they became popular in the youth culture of the 1950s and 1960s.
In the 1950s, creeper shoes became an integral part of the Teddy Boy subculture in Great Britain. Teddy boys were a youth group known for their rebellious attitude and love of rock ’n’ roll music. The thick soles of creeper shoes were a striking feature and quickly became a symbol of the counterculture.
In the 1970s, creeper shoes experienced a revival within the punk movement. Punk rock bands and their followers adopted the creeper shoe style as an expression of nonconformity and rebellion.
The campaign features Kadeem France and stylist Nadia Dahan. Nadia trained in Cardiff and London and draws inspiration for her work as a stylist from music icons as well as from her family, which consists of “artfully dressed, strong Persian women.” As the lead singer of the heavy metal band Loathe, Kadeem embodies the attitude and flair of the subcultures of the ’70s and ’80s that made the creeper the cross-genre shoe it is today.
