Photographer Daniel Derro Regan locates the Carhartt WIP Winter 2023 campaign in New York City — not as a fixed location, but as a fragment of memory and time that receives a strange response in the light of the present.
The ambient lighting throughout the series of images underlines the synthetic nocturnal glow of the city, which stretches from Queens to Harlem, and at the same time is reminiscent of film stills from before the millennium.
In between, there are moments of silence and loneliness that have been captured in unadorned homes or empty subway cars and platforms.
The clothes themselves are from this season's Carhartt WIP collection, but with their loose cuts and sturdy fabrics, they also embody a sense of NYC in the late 90s.
This is not the result of a conscious desire for nostalgia, but from the cyclical nature of aesthetics, in which even timeless classics can experience a feeling of lull and bursts of new energy.
In dialogue with Regan, these ideas offer an atmospheric view of the city that does not feel strictly bound to a specific era, but to memories that are interpreted from a contemporary perspective.
