The history of Asphaltgold is closely tied to the adidas ZX silhouettes.
Since its founding in 2008, the store has become a go-to destination for defining ZX releases—from iconic retro models to reinterpretations and new iterations.
The ZX has long been more than just a product; it’s an integral part of sneaker culture. Limited-edition drops, curated stories, and in-house projects have repeatedly brought the silhouette into the spotlight.
An early milestone was the first adidas event at Asphaltgold in 2009.
To mark the one-year anniversary, the community gathered for the first time at the store on Darmstadt’s Friedensplatz to celebrate the release of the legendary ZX 8000 OG Aqua.
Numerous other ZX drops followed, continuing this trend to this day. With the new ZX 8000 Asphaltgold Exclusive, another chapter is now being added to this story.
Under the “Above the Noise” campaign theme, this release isn’t about volume or hype. Instead, it embodies a minimalist approach, clarity, and a deliberately understated design.
The colorway puts the materials front and center, creating a calm counterpoint to often over-the-top releases. The focus is clearly on the silhouette itself.
The design focuses on the essentials. Different shades of gray without strong contrasts allow the construction and function to take center stage. Gray suede meets striped nylon.
Complemented by reflective overlays on the vamp and heel, as well as the three cotton stripes in greige. The combination of different materials gives the shoe a noticeable depth, while the rubber sole provides a warm contrast.
Distinctive details include the gray Torsion Bar—known as the “bone”—the light-colored Torsion lace tag, and the transparent Soft Cell heel window lined with gray mesh.
These elements draw on familiar design cues from the ZX series and reinterpret them in a minimalist, contemporary style. The model is rounded out by two laces in different colors.
The visual presentation also follows the “Above the Noise” approach. Instead of relying on AI-generated content, the focus is deliberately on authenticity and storytelling. The result remains minimalist, allowing the product to speak for itself.
The adidas Originals ZX8000 Asphaltgold Exclusive launches today, April 1, and is available exclusively at Asphaltgold.
