OTW by Vans, a platform on which Vans collaborates and creates with pioneers on the scene, announces the cooperation with renowned Dutch artist Piet Parra.
The professional skateboarder was sponsored by Vans back in the 1990s and for this collaboration comes back to a shoe with which he has a long-standing personal connection: the Vans Half Cab — his favorite skate shoe then and now.
The collaboration in 2024 therefore means not only a return to Vans but also a return to its skateboarding roots. The OTW by Vans x Piet Parra Suede Half Cab is a vivid reinterpretation of the classic shoe, with contrasting premium suede inserts in Parra's signature color palette.
The overlapping undulating cutouts distort the lines of the original Half Cab and are in keeping with Parra's fluid and eye-catching creative language seen in his artwork.
The shoe's co-branded insoles include a call from Parra for those who might be distracted by the sneaker's seductive look: "Don't forget to skate in these!"
Parra says about the collaboration: “The Half Cab is my favorite skate shoe. An instant classic embraced by the most skilled and stylish skaters of the time. I’ve skated through dozens of pairs in every incredible colorway.
I wanted to honor the original design while adding a personal touch. As the suede version has always been my favorite, I went with that material and added custom-shaped panels to give them an organic feel, aligning with the aesthetics of my artwork and drawings. The colors were chosen to complement this vision. It feels like a full-circle moment.”
For the campaign with Vans team rider Curren Caples, Vans and Parra reinterpreted the skate documentary video “Ban This” from 1989, one of Parra's favorite videos. The video shows an unforgettable scene by Steve Caballero, after whom the Half Cab was named.
The OTW by Vans x Piet Parra Suede Half Cab will be released tomorrow at Asphaltgold.
