VHS or Video Home System is a standard for recording or playing moving image from magnetic tape cassettes. It was developed by JVC in the 1970s. VHS enabled the mainstream consumer to take control about how to watch a movie. In an age of YouTube, Netflix and the Internet as a whole this might not be too easy to understand.

But before VHS you were only able to watch a movie when going to the cinema or sitting in front of the TV at the right moment.

With VHS you were able to buy a movie - they cost a fortune though, to rent a movie in a video rental store or to record a movie from TV. It was a revolution! VHS became the most successful global video format for over two decades.

At the end of the 90s a new format came out, DVD. The DVD killed the VHS format in a very slow process through the coming years. The last VHS hollywood movie to be officially released was in 2006 (A History of Violence by David Cronenberg).

DESIGN

The simple black VHS cassette was the main inspiration for the design of the Saucony Shadow 5000 VHS.

The black upper is made of satin suede, the Saucony logo and heel tab are constructed from smooth leather and the toebox and side panel are predominantly mesh.

‍

The perforated suede leather tongue features a label with the TGWO script logo and the transparent eyelets represent spools of the tape. On the side of the heel you’ll find a debossed TGWO box logo.

A TV test pattern color chart and a silver metallic VHSaucony logo top of the heel section. The mudguard of the right shoe features the classic control symbols of every video tape recorder: rewind, stop, pause, play, fast forward and record, whilst the eject symbol fits perfectly on the insole.

Finally, the see through outsole was inspired by the TV screen and shows a mix of white noise and the TGWO script logo.

SHADOW 5000

The first release of the Shadow 5000 was at the peak of VHSs popularity in 1989. It was a workhorse running shoe that built the reputation of Saucony across the world. Even today, the Shadow remains in the Saucony performance line as a technical shoe.

PACKAGING

The The Good Will Out x Saucony Shadow 5000 VHS comes in a video tape recorder box designed by Hollis Brown Thornton.

‍

The inlay paper was also made by him showing stacks of drawn VHS tapes. The first in store customers will get an original VHS tape featuring a real movie gem from the 80s.

Das Video Home System, oder abgekürzt VHS, ist ein Standard für die Aufnahme und das Abspielen von Bewegtbild auf Magnetbandkassetten. VHS ermöglichte dem Nutzer, darüber zu bestimmen, wie er sich einen Film anschauen will.

Im Zeitalter von YouTube, Netflix und dem Internet mag dies nicht mehr so ganz nachvollziehbar sein. Doch bevor es VHS gab, konnte man sich einen Film nur anschauen, indem man ins Kino ging oder im richtigen Augenblick vor dem Fernseher saß.

Dank VHS konnte man sich nun Filme kaufen – diese kosteten ein Vermögen, man konnte sich einen Film in einer Videothek ausleihen oder selbst im Fernsehen aufnehmen.

Eine Revolution! Für mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte war VHS das erfolgreichste Videoformat. Ende der neunziger Jahre kam dann ein neues Format auf den Markt - DVD. Über die folgenden Jahre wurde das VHS-Format in einem sehr langsamen Prozess völlig von der DVD verdrängt.

Im Jahr 2006 wurde der letzte Hollywood-Film im VHS-Format veröffentlicht (A History of Violence von David Cronenberg).

DESIGN

Die schlichte schwarze VHS-Kassette dient als Inspiration für die Gestaltung des Saucony Shadow 5000 VHS.

‍

Das Obermaterial besteht aus Satin-Veloursleder, der Saucony-Logostreifen und das Heel Tab aus Glattleder, während die Toe Box und das Seitenteil überwiegend aus Mesh bestehen.

‍

Die Zunge besteht aus perforiertem Velourleder mit einem TGWO Schreibschrift-Logo. Genau wie die Spulen eines Videobandes bestehen die Ösen aus durchsichtigem Plastik. Auf der Seite der Ferse findet sich ein geprägtes TGWO Box-Logo.

Die als Fernsehtestbild bekannte Farbpalette und ein silbermetallisches VHSaucony Logo befinden sich auf der Ferse.

‍

Der Mudguard am rechten Schuh zeigt die klassischen Steuerungssymbole eines Videorekorders: schneller Rücklauf, Stopp, Pause, Wiedergabe, Schneller Vorlauf und Aufnahme.

‍

Die Auswurftaste findet sich auf der Einlegesohle wieder. Die durchsichtige Sohle soll einen Fernsehbildschirm symbolisieren und zeigt weisses Rauschen sowie das TGWO Schreibschrift-Logo.

SHADOW 5000

Der erste Saucony Shadow 5000 erschien 1989 auf dem Höhepunkt der VHS-Ära. Er ist eine Ikone unter den Laufschuhen und besonders erfolgreich. Bis heute gilt er als vergleichsweise technischer Schuh.
