Warum genau hat New Balance mit der Produktion von Schuhen in Flimby begonnen? Das ist ja ein sehr kleines Dorf in einem sehr abgelegenen Teil des Vereinigten K\u00f6nigreichs!<\/em><\/p>\n

Haha, gute Frage! Als andere Firmen anfingen, die Produktion aus Gro\u00dfbritannien in asiatische Fabriken zu verlagern, gab es hier bereits fertig ausgebildete Arbeitskr\u00e4fte, Maschinen und Einrichtungen, die genutzt werden konnten. Unser Eigent\u00fcmer Jim Davis sah darin ein gro\u00dfes Potenzial. <\/p>\n

Im Jahr 1982 fand Jim einen Standort etwa 7 Meilen von Flimby entfernt in Lillyhall. Jim war sehr beeindruckt von den Menschen dort und fand, dass sie die Arbeitsethik des Unternehmens voll und ganz verk\u00f6rperten: Teamarbeit, Integrit\u00e4t und absolute Kundenzufriedenheit. <\/p>\n

Jim hat immer erkannt, wie wichtig es ist, dass Teams ein tiefes Verst\u00e4ndnis daf\u00fcr haben, wie Dinge hergestellt werden, und wie wichtig es ist, nach einer besseren Produktion zu streben. <\/p>\n

Was w\u00fcrdest Du sagen, sind die charakteristischen Modelle, die in Flimby hergestellt werden?<\/em><\/p>\n

Das \u00e4ndert sich mit der Weiterentwicklung unserer Kollektion, denn wir wollen sie immer „fresh“ halten. Aber einige unserer ikonischen Modelle sind der 991, 1500 und 576. <\/p>\n

Au\u00dferdem haben wir dieses Jahr den 730 wieder auf den Markt gebracht. Eines der ersten Modelle, die wir 1982 in Gro\u00dfbritannien hergestellt haben – ein echter unbesungener Held aus unserer Vergangenheit.<\/p>\n

\u200dWir haben in den letzten Jahren einige gro\u00dfartige Kollaborationen mit Flimby gesehen. Wie lange dauert es normalerweise von der ersten Idee bis zum fertigen Produkt?<\/em> <\/p>\n

Ich hatte das Privileg, im Laufe der Jahre an vielen Kollaborationen zu arbeiten. Das ist wirklich der spa\u00dfigste Teil des Gesch\u00e4fts! <\/p>\n

Was die Fristen angeht, so sind sie im Allgemeinen k\u00fcrzer geworden, aber das h\u00e4ngt von guten Partnern ab, die von Beginn des Prozesses an eine klare Vision haben. Ich w\u00fcrde sagen, im Durchschnitt dauert es jetzt etwa 18 Monate von der ersten Idee bis zum Launch. <\/p>\n

\u200dWie viele Menschen arbeiten in der Flimby-Fabrik? Wir haben geh\u00f6rt, dass einige Leute schon sehr lange dort arbeiten, was ist der Rekord?<\/em><\/p>\n

Derzeit arbeiten etwa 270 Menschen in der Flimby-Fabrik, einschlie\u00dflich Lager- und B\u00fcropersonal. Wir haben immer noch einen Mitarbeiter, der seit 1982 in der Fabrik arbeitet. <\/p>\n

Wir haben auch Br\u00fcder, Schwestern, Tanten und Onkel, die alle zusammen arbeiten – es ist ein ganz besonderer Ort.<\/p>\n

Das ist unterschiedlich, aber um Ihnen ein Beispiel zu geben: Beim M991GL sind 30 Personen an der Herstellung jedes Paars beteiligt – von Anfang bis Ende.<\/p>\n

Heutzutage verwendet New Balance Hunderte von verschiedenen Materialien. K\u00f6nnen Sie Schuhe aus allen Materialien herstellen?<\/p>\n

Bei der Herstellung von Schuhen k\u00f6nnen heute mehr Materialien verwendet werden als je zuvor, aber es ist nicht m\u00f6glich, tragbare\/qualitative Schuhe aus allen Materialien herzustellen.  Wir sind stolz auf unsere Qualit\u00e4t, und es ist wirklich wichtig, dass die Rohmaterialien f\u00fcr den Zweck geeignet sind. <\/p>\n

Das ist bei weitem die schwierigste Frage f\u00fcr mich, da ich so viele Dinge, die wir in der Vergangenheit gemacht haben, aus verschiedenen Gr\u00fcnden liebe. Ich freue mich auch auf die Dinge, die wir f\u00fcr die Zukunft geplant haben (ich kann jetzt noch nicht sagen, welche das sind).<\/p>\n

Zuletzt hab ich den M730UKF und den 991UKF in die Finger bekommen, beide geh\u00f6ren zu der 40 Years Anniversary Kollektion. Ich freue mich dar\u00fcber hinaus auch auf die Kollaborationen, die dieses Jahr noch auf den Markt kommen sollen. Und auf noch so vieles weitere…<\/p>\n

Hi, my name is Dawn Brankley, and I am the \u2018Senior product manager\u2019 of New Balance Made in the UK.<\/p>\n

With the 40th anniversary taking place this year, we wanted to ask, what makes Made in UK successful?<\/em><\/p>\n

For me, it\u2019s our team of people in Flimby who make it. Their passion for what they do as a team and their commitment to make quality shoes are second to none. They have been the backbone of the success. <\/p>\n

Why exactly did New Balance start producing sneakers in Flimby? It\u2019s a very small village in a very remote part of the UK!<\/em><\/p>\n

Haha, good question! When other companies‘ production started offshoring from the UK to Asia-based factories, there was a ready-made workforce, machines, and facilities available to use here. Our owner Jim Davis saw huge potential in this. <\/p>\n

In 1982 Jim found a site about 7 miles down the road from Flimby in Lillyhall. <\/p>\n

Jim was super impressed with the people and thought that they completely embodied the work ethics of the company: teamwork, integrity, and total customer satisfaction. <\/p>\n

Jim has always acknowledged how important it is to have teams of people who have a deep understanding of how things are made and how important it is to strive for better production. <\/p>\n

What would you say are the signature sneakers produced in Flimby?<\/em><\/p>\n

This changes as we evolve our collection, as we always want to keep it fresh. But some of our most iconic models are the 991, 1500, and 576. That said, this year, we re-launched the 730, one of the first models we made in the UK back in 1982, a real unsung hero from our past.<\/p>\n

What is the most produced sneaker in Flimby?<\/em><\/p>\n

Similarly, this has changed over time, but at present, the 991 as a model is the focus of the collection. <\/p>\n

We\u2019ve seen some great collaborations coming out of Flimby over the last few years; how long does it usually take from the first idea to the final product? <\/em><\/p>\n

I have had the privilege of working on many collaborations over the years, it really is the most fun part of the business! <\/p>\n

In terms of timelines, these have gotten shorter in general, but this relies on good partners with clear vision from the start of the process. I\u2019d say on average it now takes about 18 months from initial idea to launch. <\/p>\n

How many people work at the Flimby factory? We\u2019ve heard some people have worked there for a very long time, what\u2019s the record?<\/em><\/p>\n

Currently about 270 people work in the Flimby factory including warehouse and office staff. We still have one member of staff working in the factory that started back in 1982. We also have brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles all working together- it\u2019s a really special place.<\/p>\n

How many people touch a shoe from start to finish in the factory?<\/em><\/p>\n

It varies, but to give you an example, the M991GL has 30 people involved in making each pair – from start to finish.<\/p>\n

Nowadays New Balance has used hundreds of different materials, can you make shoes out of all material types?<\/em><\/p>\n

Footwear can now use more materials than ever before, but it\u2019s not possible to make wearable\/ quality shoes from anything.  We pride ourselves on quality and it\u2019s really important that the raw materials are fit for purpose as a start point. <\/p>\n

Do you have an archive with all the shoes made in the Flimby factory?<\/em><\/p>\n

Yeah, we have an internal archive. We use it a lot as reference for bring backs and future idea creation. Sorry, I can\u2019t show you any sneak peeks!<\/p>\n

What is your favourite Made in the UK sneaker release?<\/em><\/p>\n

This is by far the hardest question for me as I love so many things we have done in the past for different reasons, and I\u2019m excited for things we have planned for the future (I can\u2019t say what they are right now).<\/p>\n

I recently got my hand on the M730UKF and 991UKF, both part of our 40th anniversary celebrations, I\u2019m also looking forward to the 1500UKF, upcoming collabs. Plus so, so many more\u2026<\/p>\n
